VTR National Convention

July 28 - August 1, 1999
Portland, Maine

The VTR 1999 Convention was hosted by New England Triumphs in Portland, Maine to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of VTR in a unique setting on the Maine coast.

If you didn't go to the convention, you missed a great time! If you were one of the 314 registered Triumph owners, thanks for having joined us in an outstanding meet. Whether you attended or not, we hope you enjoy looking at the photos from the convention, the event results, or reading the recap of the event.

VTR 1999 Convention Event Results

Funkhana....

Driver / Navigator pairs tested a variety of skills while negotiating the twisting course. This event was a fun event which served as an icebreaker for participants and spectators.

Fun Rallye....

The fun Rallye was available Wednesday, Thursday and Friday as a do-it-yourself rallye. The course took participants over some of Maine's more scenic roads with spectacular views while they searched for answers to rallye questions.

L.L.Bean Breakfast Run....

Even though there weren't any trophies to be earned, a few hardy folks struck out to L.L.Bean's main retail store in Freeport at the sun-breaking time of 6:00 am! They did at least beat the crowds so that they could shop shop and explore this huge, fascinating store.

TSD Rallye....

In this enjoyable challenge for novice and experienced participants alike, driver and navigator were able to hone their skills while traveling over scenic Maine country roads. This rallye wasn't a race, but an attempt to control average time by varying speed over an interesting course set up by rallye experts.

Autocross....

The VTR autocross was run in conjunction with the Cumberland Motor Club which has been running autocrosses since 1958.

The autocross results are available in one of two formats:

Tour to Kennebunkport....

This tour was a do-it-yourself tour of about an hour each way along the coast to this seaside town where tourers saw grand old homes, elegant inns, the "Wedding Cake House," and a church with a bell made by Paul Revere in 1803. Some visited unique shops, had lunch overlooking the Kennebunk River, explored the antique trolley museum (and rode on them, too!), or drove by the estate of former President George Bush. This tour was a great way to catch the real flavor of the Maine coast.

Craft, Model, Photo Contest....

Dozens of Crafts, Models, and Photos graced the registration room at the Holiday Inn for the duration of the show.

Welcome Reception....

What a party! I hope you didn't miss this one! We packed the Holiday Inn by the Bay, to relax, to renew acquaintances, to meet new friends and to get oriented to upcoming events.

Bay Cruise & Lobster Bake....

No trip to Maine is complete without a real Downeast Lobster Bake with all the fixin's. We cruised Casco Bay to Peaks Island for gorgeous views and great food!

Awards Banquet & 25th Birthday Bash....

We wound it all up with dinner at the Holiday Inn's elegant facility. The guest speaker was Richard Langworth, noted automobile writer who was instrumental in the founding of VTR.

Panoramic Photo....

We captured the spirit of this convention with a group picture of nearly all participating cars by the Portland Head Light, one of the oldest and most scenic lighthouses in the country.

Concours and Participants' Choice....

Just about all the cars in the convention parked on the old parade ground of Fort Williams Park for either the Concours d'Elegance or Participants' Choice Car shows. Everybody agreed that the field was full of a stunning collection of Triumphs!

We hope you enjoyed the 1999 VTR convention in Maine! Maybe we'll see you at the VTR 2000 convention in the other Portland?!?
